Why is our planet killing itself?

Somewhere by the riverside,
you will find a big oak tree
older than both you and me.
It's magical, don't you see?

A year or two ago today,
you could see the children play
through snow making their way
and cheerfully screaming „YAY!“

Sometime ago the summer was sweet,
the smell of cherries and playful beat.
And now our days are rainy an cold
they make you think that nature grew old.

„So, why is this happening?“, you ask yourself.
„Why is our planet killing itself?“
And here I am, offering answers.
We’re not innocent like endangered damsels.

We hurt our home every day,
every our movement some difference made.
„What did I do?“, now you say.
I shout at you:“ Just look this way!“

I point my finger on a dumping ground,
where nobody else is around.
Because humans run from responsibilities,
that's why our Earth has dissabilities.

Look at your highways,
dirty with smoke.
Look at the bottle
that somebody broke.

Smell the air within your lungs,
feel the chemicals that it keeps.
And answer the question for yourself:
„Why is our planet killing itself?“

„It isn't killing itself,
we are killing it.“,
you say quietly,
understanding finally.

Suddenly, you see birds,
barely flying,
from poisoned air
they are slowly dying.

You see the ocean,
from oil black.
You realise that nature
will never come back.

You still shake your head,
and hopelessly say:
„What can we do?
There is no way.“

I smile gently,
and whisper to you.
„Everybody can make a difference,
including you.“

„What one person cannot fix,
thousands of us can do like this.“
I snap my fingers and look at you
while you say fightfully:“ What can I do?“

„Don't use your car, but walk instead.
Don't kill the innocent, but help instead.
Love every creature, and every plant,
and our sucsses is almost for grant.“

„Tell this to everyone you know:
‘Time is to change, time is to grow,
we need to change, not then but now.’
And when you finish, then make them vow.“

„Make them vow to protect our Earth,
to make it beautiful, not anymore hurt.
Learn them to love the homeland of ours,
make them stare at sunsets for hours.“

„If we all work together,
we can achieve much, much more.
So, come on, let's raise a score,
and heal our planet from here to it's core.“

„As the time passes by,
people will stop asking you 'Why?'
and they will understand more,
what does 'ecology' stand for.“

„The old oak tree
again beautiful could be.
And some new children
the snow could see.“

Looking at your eyes, I say:
„I know it ain't easy,
but we can’t just pray.
We have to fight, am I right?“

Now you nod, agreeing fully
as I'm preparing my bottom line.
When I speak, you shiver again:
„Are you ready to fight for your life?“

„Are you ready to enlighten the future,
make it brighter for generations to come?
If you say yes,
then half is done.“
